MOVE Training

At the present time, MOVE Middle East is conducting Basic Provider training courses on the MOVE program in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. The basic training course is a four-day course that provides a basic introduction to the elements of the MOVE program and serves as the first step in qualifying candidates in order to become MOVE certified trainers.


Who should attend MOVE Training?

MOVE is based on a team approach. Adults involved in the life of a person with disabilities will benefit from attending a training session. Typically, participants include parents, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, educators, para-professionals, administrators, and nursing staff.

Recommended Equipment/Materials

The MOVE Curriculum and the following equipment are recommended for demonstration purposes: Dynamic Stander and Pacer gait trainer. The Arabic MOVE Curriculum is included in the training materials.

Presentation Equipment Requirements

VCR, TV, table, podium, overhead projector and screen. A microphone is optional.

Day 1 – MORNING SESSION

  • What is MOVE?
  • Introduction to the Program
    • Evolution of the MOVE Program
    • Purposes of the program
    • Eligibility for the program
    • Bottom-Up model vs. Top-Down model
    • The Six Steps of MOVE

DAY 1 - AFTERNOON SESSION

  • Testing
    • Introduction to Testing
    • Top-Down Motor Milestone Test
    • 16 categories of skills
    • 74 skills
    • 4 levels of success
    • Interpret varying levels of success
    • Discussion of testing procedures

DAY 2 - MORNING SESSION

  • Setting Goals
    • Introduction to setting goals
    • Select goals that promote functional adult living in the home and community
    • Ask parents and children what their goals and dreams are
    • Practice administering the Top-Down Motor Milestone Test
    • Practice selecting specific functional activities
  • Task Analysis
    • Introduction to task analysis
    • Definition of task analysis as it relates to the MOVE Program
    • Discussion of task analysis of targeted activities
    • Selection of mobility skills to be addressed by the student
    • Static positioning and the MOVE Curriculum

DAY 2 - AFTERNOON SESSION

  • Equipment
    • Origin of equipment-need for staff to be able to physically manage a student while teaching mobility skills
    • Purpose: to facilitate mobility with gradual reduction of support or prompts as skill is acquired
    • Equipment used in the MOVE Program is regarded as temporary
    • Static vs. dynamic
    • Leisure sitting vs. functional sitting
    • Identify removable prompts
    • Contraindications
    • Equipment not a substitute for teaching; makes instruction possible

DAY 3 - MORNING SESSION

  • Measuring Prompts
    • Definition of prompts
    • Substitutional prompts vs. instructional prompts
    • Purposes for the Prompt Reduction Plan
    • Physical prompts for sitting, standing and walking goals
    • Measuring prompts
    • Practice measuring and charting entry-level prompts

DAY 3 - AFTERNOON SESSION

  • Prompt Reduction
    • Developing a plan for prompt reduction
    • Goals and parameters

DAY 4 - MORNING SESSION

  • Teaching the Skills
    • Use of equipment alone does not lead to acquisition of skills. They still must be taught.
    • Four stages of learning
